Mr. Holtkiss and I are pretty frugal people most of the time. This is why I will be able to quit my job and just do part-time substitute teaching if I feel like doing so next year. We are beginning to see the list of things we would trade for a second income getting longer and harder to live with. We truly believe that you live on what you make, and with all the kids grown and gone, we should be able to budget just fine.
But I went to Walmart the other day. School is out for Christmas break, so a few of our teachers, secretaries, and other employees can be found there working during the day. They need that extra income to survive because they live on an educational professional's salary. This chaps my ass!
Are there other professions who require bachelor degrees and extra certifications, and sometimes even more, who have to work at Walmart when they leave their professional jobs each day? I haven't seen any in our town. Guess society values their work more than ours.
However, it was kind of nice to see my peers looking well-rested for a change. Usually they moonlight after school and on weekends and are bone tired by the time they get to school each morning. That's what they have to do to make ends meet if they have kids at home. I only work at teaching and it is too much for one person. How do the others manage? And tell me again why we cannot keep good teachers.
